BEIRUT: Chief of Lebanon’s Hezbollah Hassan Nasrallah on Wednesday said his group would accept Hamas’s decision on Gaza peace negotiations, reiterating that his movement would stop cross-border attacks on Israel if a ceasefire were reached.
Hezbollah has exchanged almost daily fire with Israeli forces in support of Hamas since the war started in Gaza on October 7.
“Hamas is negotiating… on behalf of the whole axis of resistance,” Nasrallah said. He said whatever Hamas accepts, everyone accepts and is satisfied with.
Nasrallah’s remarks came days after he had a meeting with a Hamas delegation led by foreign relations chief Khalil al-Hayya, and as negotiations were to resume in Qatar towards peace.
Hamas has hinted that it would drop its insistence on a complete ceasefire which Israel has repeatedly dismissed as a condition for starting truce talks.
Nasrallah repeated his stance that if a ceasefire is reached, the movement will observe a cease-fire without any discussion.
He made the remarks during a televised address to commemorate a senior Hezbollah commander who was killed in an Israeli strike last week.
However, Nasrallah warned that “we will never allow any attack that the Israeli enemy might carry out against Lebanon (even) if there is a ceasefire in Gaza”.
In Lebanon, the cross-border violence since October has killed about 500 people. Nasrallah said Israeli actions to push Hezbollah back from the border won’t fix the situation for Israel.
