KAHULUI: The death toll in Hawaii horrific wildfires has risen to 99 and could double in the coming days, the state’s governor warned on Monday.
Josh Green told reporters that there are 99 deaths and the number could be doubled in the next 10 days, AFP reported.
The horrific incident is the deadliest disaster in the United States’ history. As per media reports, fresh evacuations are underway in the region as fires creep closer to the area of Kaanapali.
Governor Josh Green said more casualties are certain as emergency workers carry out their work with sniffer dogs to locate dead bodies buried under the rubbles. He said 99 people have been killed in the deadliest wildfire.
Hawaii Fire Death Toll Rises To 99: Governor
The wildfire almost destroyed the historic town of Lahaina on Maui Island, a major tourist attraction in Hawaii.
Governor Josh Green added that rescue workers find 10 to 20 dead bodies daily, noting that only a small part of Lahaina has been searched.
Around 1,300 people are missing in Lahaina, and the people are facing difficulties to contact their families as the concerned authorities have yet to restore phone communications.
The town of Lahaina, was home to around 12,000 people and a major tourist attraction.
Earlier, officials in the Hawaiian fire-hit county feared it could take years to repair the damage caused by a massive wildfire.
President Biden has already approved a major federal disaster declaration to make funding available for people, governments, and local businessmen affected by the wildfires.
Hawaii is also getting support from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the National Guard.
