RIYADH: The Gulf Cooperation Council and the Arab League have strongly condemned the recent drone attack on Saudi Arabia originating from Iraq.

Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Jasem Albudaiwi slammed the hostile attack targeting Saudi Arabia via drones launched from Iraqi airspace, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Monday.

The GCC Secretary-General emphasised that the attack constitutes a blatant violation of regional security and stability, noting that it reflects a persistent escalatory approach that endangers safety and poses a threat to critical infrastructure, key facilities, and the security of the region as a whole.

He further underscored that the security of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is an indivisible part of the security of the GCC member states. “The council countries stand as one with the Kingdom in all measures it undertakes to maintain its security and stability, as well as to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Albudaiwi said.

Meanwhile, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit also denounced the attack on the kingdom involving three drones that violated Saudi airspace, adding that it constitutes a violation of Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, the SPA reported.

In a statement, he rejected the attack while reaffirming the Arab League’s full solidarity with Saudi Arabia and its support for the measures taken to protect its security and stability in accordance with international law.

Arab Parliament Speaker Mohammed Al-Yamahi, in a statement, condemned the attack on Saudi Arabia from Iraqi airspace. He praised the Saudi air defence forces for their swift and effective interception and neutralisation of the drones.

In a statement carried by the SPA, Al-Yamahi expressed the parliament’s full solidarity with the Kingdom and its support for all measures taken to safeguard its security, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

He emphasised that the Kingdom’s security is an integral part of Arab national security, calling for a firm stance to deter the entities behind these repeated attacks targeting the security and stability of Arab countries.

Earlier, several Arab and Muslim nations also denounced the attack in the strongest terms. These include Egypt, Jordan, Mauritania, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain.

Saudi Arabia announced on Sunday that its air defences intercepted and destroyed three drones that entered the Kingdom’s airspace from Iraqi territory.

According to Saudi Arabia’s Defence ministry spokesman, the drones had entered on Sunday morning, adding that the Kingdom “reserves the right to respond at the appropriate time and place”.

Major General Turki Al-Maliki said three drones were intercepted and destroyed after entering the Kingdom’s airspace from Iraqi territory.

According to the statement, the drones were detected and neutralised after crossing into Saudi airspace on May 17, 2026.

Major General Al-Maliki stressed that the Ministry of Defence reserves the right to respond “at the appropriate time and place” to any threat targeting the Kingdom’s sovereignty, security and the safety of its citizens and residents on its territory.

He added that Saudi Arabia would take all necessary operational measures to confront any attempt to violate its airspace or endanger the safety of citizens and residents.
