ISLAMABAD: Google informed a tribunal set up in India that the country’s antitrust investigating officials copied sections of a EU ruling against the US firm. Legal papers show that the European ruling was based on Google its Android operating system’s market dominance.

in October 2022, Alphabet Inc’s Google GOOGL.O was fined $161 million by the Competition Commission of India taking advantage of its dominant position in markets such as the Android app store and online search. The CCI asked GOOGL.O to change limitations imposed on makers of smartphone related to the prior installation of apps.

Quoting undisclosed sources Reuters reported that in October last year, Google had been concerned about the Indian directive as the remedies ordered were thought to be more stringent than the European Commission’s 2018 order regarding the imposition of unlawful limits on Android mobile phone makers. In that case, GOOGL.O has challenged the record $4.3 billion fine.

GOOGL.O, in its submission to an Indian appeals tribunal, argues the CCI’s probe unit extensively copy-pasted from the European Commission ruling. It has presented evidence from Europe that was not analyzed in India.
