CAIRO: The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Arab League on Saturday condemned Iran’s attack on a United Arab Emirates tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, warning that targeting commercial vessels threatened maritime navigation, regional security and international trade.
In a statement, Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy condemned Iran’s targeting of an Emirati oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. He called the attack a new episode in Iran’s ongoing violations of freedom of navigation and maritime safety, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.
Fahmy stated that this aggressive behaviour violates UN Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2817, which affirm freedom of navigation and reject targeting commercial vessels.
Holding Tehran fully responsible for attacks on Arab assets, the secretary-general emphasised that such actions contravene international principles regarding maritime safety and carry serious repercussions for regional security and stability, SPA reported.
GCC chief condemns Iranian attack
Meanwhile, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General Jasem Albudaiwi strongly condemned the dangerous Iranian attack targeting an ADNOC tanker while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring that the assault represents an unacceptable escalation and a direct threat to maritime navigation and international trade, SPA reported.
Albudaiwi stressed the categorical rejection of any Iranian attempts to convert the vital international waterway into a tool for pressure and threats.
He called on the international community to take a firm stance to stop such attacks, prevent their recurrence, and ensure navigation security in accordance with international law, the law of the sea, and relevant international resolutions.
He reiterated the GCC’s full solidarity with the United Arab Emirates, affirming complete support for all measures taken by the UAE to protect its security, sovereignty, property, and interests.
Meanwhile, Speaker of the Arab Parliament Mohammed Al-Yamahi strongly condemned the targeting of an Emirati tanker with a missile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, emphasising that targeting commercial vessels and threatening international navigation constitutes a dangerous escalation that directly impacts global trade and energy supplies.
In a statement, Al-Yamahi expressed the Arab Parliament’s full solidarity with the United Arab Emirates and its support for all measures taken to preserve its security, stability, resources, and facilities.
He called on the international community to assume its responsibilities in ensuring the security of maritime navigation and confronting practices that destabilise international waterways and expand regional conflict.
