ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s freelance workforce has generated nearly $1 billion in export earnings, highlighting the accelerating growth of the country’s digital economy and the expanding role of remote services in foreign exchange generation.

Official data show freelance exports crossed the $950 million mark during the current fiscal cycle.

The milestone was attributed to rising global demand for software development, graphic design, digital marketing, content production and emerging artificial intelligence-related services.

The achievement reflects Pakistan’s growing position in the international freelance marketplace, where a large pool of young professionals increasingly offers remote services to overseas clients through digital platforms.

Authorities view the sector as an important contributor to economic resilience at a time when Pakistan is seeking to strengthen exports and ease pressure on external accounts.

Government officials attributed the growth to overall internet penetration, digital skills programmes and improvements in online payment mechanisms, which have enabled freelancers to receive international earnings more efficiently.

Industry experts say Pakistan’s youthful workforce and competitive service costs have helped the country gain traction in the global remote work economy, particularly after worldwide demand for online services surged following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Technology sector representatives, however, stressed the need for more reliable internet infrastructure, simplified taxation policies and easy access to global payment gateways to maintain growth momentum.

Islamabad has increasingly identified the information technology and digital services sector as a strategic engine for export expansion, employment generation and long-term economic modernisation.
