MOSCOW: The Kremlin stated on Wednesday that “forcing” Moscow into peace would be a “fatal mistake,” dismissing remarks made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the United Nations General Assembly.

President Zelensky said Tuesday that Moscow can only be forced into a peace settlement and pledged not to negotiate on Russia’s terms to end the war.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told media persons Wednesday that such a stance is a fatal mistake and a systemic mistake. He added that it is a profound misunderstanding that will inevitably have consequences for Ukraine.

“Moscow is in favour of peace, but with the terms that its stability is ensured and the objectives of the special military operation are satisfied,” he said.

President Zelensky is in the US this week hoping to boost global backing for Ukraine. He told the UN that they knew some in the world wanted to talk to Russian President V Putin. He called such opinions “folly.”

“Moscow can only be forced into peace, and that is exactly what’s required — forcing Moscow into peace,” Kyiv’s leader said.
