BRUSSELS: The European Union (EU) has urged Iran to review its decision to withdraw accreditation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors.
According to western media reports on Sunday, the UN nuclear watchdog said that the development could affect its work.
Iran says decision based on its governance rights
Meanwhile Iran said the decision on inspectors was based on its governance rights protected in the Safeguards Agreement between the two sides.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kana’anhe added, the UK, France, Germany and the US, through their unnecessary demands misused the IAEA’s Board of Governors for their own political reasons.
Brussels, which is coordinator for the 2015 Iran nuclear deal known as the JCPOA has voiced concerned over the development.
A spokesman said the decision would impact the agency’s ability to conduct its verification activities and monitoring of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action or JCPOA.
“The EU urges Iran to reconsider its decision without delay.”
In 2015, major world powers signed an accord with Iran under which Tehran would slow down its nuclear program in exchange of lifting economic sanctions.
In 2018 the US former President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the agreement and reimposed sanctions.
Britain, France and Germany, signatories to the JCPOA last week announced that they would not end sanctions on Iran.
