  • Payments will be processed through Crypto.com Pay
  • Move aligns with Dubai’s digital economy ambitions

ISLAMABAD: Emirates has become one of the world’s largest airlines to accept cryptocurrency for flight bookings, allowing customers to pay for tickets using digital assets through Crypto.com Pay.

The Dubai-based carrier announced that the new payment option has been introduced across its booking platforms. It would enable eligible customers to complete transactions using supported cryptocurrencies. Payments will be settled in UAE dirhams in line with the country’s regulatory requirements.

The development follows a memorandum of understanding signed between Emirates and Crypto.com in 2025 to explore the integration of digital payment solutions.

The airline said the initiative reflects its commitment to innovation and to providing greater flexibility to customers.

Emirates did not disclose the full list of cryptocurrencies which will be accepted. However, Crypto.com Pay supports a range of major digital assets, including Bitcoin, Ethereum and several stablecoins.

The move is seen as another step in Dubai’s overall strategy to establish itself as a global centre for financial technology, blockchain and digital assets.

The emirate has introduced a regulatory framework in recent years, attracting cryptocurrency businesses and encouraging the adoption of digital payment systems.

Industry observers say the decision could accelerate the use of cryptocurrencies in the aviation sector, particularly among international travellers seeking alternative payment methods.

Several smaller airlines have experimented with crypto payments in recent years. However, Emirates is among the largest full-service carriers to formally adopt the technology.

Emirates serves six continents

The top-of-the-line airline serves more than 150 destinations across six continents and carries millions of passengers annually.

The airline said customers using Crypto.com Pay will experience the same booking process as conventional payment methods, with cryptocurrency appearing as an additional payment option during checkout.

The announcement also highlights growing momentum for digital assets in the UAE.

Other carriers in the region, including Air Arabia, have introduced crypto-related payment initiatives, while several businesses across the country have begun accepting digital currencies for goods and services.

Analysts said widespread adoption by major airlines could help further legitimise cryptocurrencies as a means of payment, although challenges related to price volatility, regulation and consumer protection remain.

The airline said the launch demonstrates how partnerships between established companies and digital asset platforms can expand payment choices and support the evolution of the global travel industry.

From two aircraft to the largest fleet

Founded in 1985 with just two aircraft, Emirates has grown into one of the world’s largest international airlines and a flagship carrier of the United Arab Emirates. Based in Dubai, the airline operates an extensive global network spanning more than 150 destinations across six continents and carries tens of millions of passengers each year.

Emirates has built its reputation on long-haul connectivity, premium services and its strategic position in Dubai, which serves as a major transit hub linking Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas.

The carrier operates one of the world’s largest fleets of wide-body aircraft, including the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777. It also has consistently ranked among the leading airlines for passenger experience and operational scale.

In recent years, Emirates has accelerated its digital transformation efforts, investing in artificial intelligence, biometric technologies and enhanced online services to improve customer experience.

The airline has also sought to position itself at the forefront of emerging technologies, reflecting Dubai’s ambition to become a global centre for innovation and digital commerce.

The introduction of cryptocurrency payments marks the latest step in that strategy. Emirates first signalled its interest in digital assets in 2025 through a partnership with Crypto.com. It has since worked to integrate the payment option into its booking platforms, expanding the range of choices available to its international customer base.
