ISLAMABAD: What if you could fly over Karachi’s notorious traffic jams, retrieve kites during Basant without climbing rooftops or bring home fresh vegetables in a car that jumps into the air? Pakistani social media users have found plenty of answers after Elon Musk’s latest Tesla flying-car demonstration sparked a wave of memes and jokes online.

From electricity wires and congested roads to traditional donkey carts transformed into airborne vehicles, internet users have adapted the futuristic concept to Pakistan’s everyday realities, turning the demonstration into a source of viral humour.

Tesla unveiled a modified version of its Roadster in a demonstration on Friday, featuring thrusters that reportedly propel the vehicle into the air using ultra-high-pressure air.

The demonstration showed the car launching off a ramp, performing a flip and landing, prompting questions about its practical applications and safety.

Although the vehicle has been described as a flying car, the demonstration has also drawn comparisons to a jumping car, with the displayed manoeuvres fuelling speculation about whether such technology could eventually offer an alternative to conventional road travel.

Pakistanis give Musk’s flying car a local twist

Pakistani social media users quickly imagined how the vehicle might fit into daily life, particularly in cities where traffic congestion, overhead electricity wires and seasonal festivities are familiar sights.

One meme depicted the flying car caught in electricity wires, highlighting a potential hazard in a country where overhead cables are common in many urban neighbourhoods. Another imagined the vehicle as a way to bypass Karachi’s traffic, while a separate joke suggested using it to bring vegetables home.

With Basant approaching, another user humorously claimed to have booked a flying car to retrieve kites during the festival. One particularly creative meme transformed a traditional donkey cart into a flying vehicle, adding a distinctly local twist to the futuristic idea.

The jokes reflect how online communities often reinterpret emerging technology through familiar cultural references, turning an innovation demonstration into a conversation about everyday challenges.

The humour has extended beyond Pakistan, with social media users in different parts of the world imagining unusual uses for Musk’s vehicle.

Some have drawn comparisons with Bollywood action films, where cars routinely perform spectacular airborne stunts, while others have questioned how flying vehicles could affect road safety, insurance and future traffic management.

For now, the demonstration has generated more jokes than practical transport solutions. Whether such technology eventually becomes commercially viable remains uncertain, but Pakistani internet users have already found one immediate use for it: turning a futuristic car into a mirror of everyday life.
