ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Minister of Egypt, Badr Abdelatty has commended Pakistan’s successful humanitarian facilitation in the repatriation of 20 Iranian and 11 Pakistani seafarers via Singapore, who had been aboard vessels seized by the United States.

The Egyptian Foreign Minist made the remarks during a telephonic conversation with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar on Sunday, according to a Foreign Office statement.

Last month, the United States military intercepted at least three tankers flying the Iranian flag in Asian waters, amid Washington’s ongoing blockade of Iran’s maritime trade.

Earlier this month Ishaq Dar said that he had sought Singapore’s support in repatriating Pakistani and Iranian seafarers aboard vessels seized by the US.

During the call the two leaders exchanged views on the evolving regional situation. “FM Abdelatty appreciated Pakistan’s sincere efforts for promoting regional peace and stability,” Foreign Office said.

They also discussed matters related to the regional consultative forum of the Foreign Ministers of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Egypt.

The discussion also focused on ongoing engagements related to the UN Security Council, as well as wider developments in multilateral diplomacy.

Both sides agreed to maintain close coordination and continue regular consultations on regional and international issues of mutual interest.

FM Abdelatty renewed his invitation to the Deputy Prime Minister to visit Egypt at the earliest opportunity for bilateral consultations and further strengthening of ties between the two countries.

The conversation comes at a time when Pakistan has continued diplomatic efforts to facilitate dialogue between Tehran and Washington and to de-escalate the ongoing conflict through diplomacy and dialogue.

Pakistan brokered a ceasefire between Tehran and Washington on April 8 that halted the war involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

On April 11, Pakistan hosted high-stakes direct talks between the US and Iranian negotiators in Islamabad.

The Islamabad Talks concluded without a final agreement; however, they paved the way for further negotiations between Washington and Tehran to permanently resolve the conflict.

The war started after the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28, prompting retaliatory action from Tehran against Israel and the Gulf countries.

The confrontation also contributed to disruptions in maritime traffic around the Strait of Hormuz.
