ARKHIPO-OSIPOVKA, Russia: A drone crashed onto a crowded beach in southern Russia on Tuesday, killing seven people, including three children, and injuring 40 others, according to local authorities, in one of the deadliest incidents involving civilians inside Russia in recent months.
The attack occurred near the Black Sea resort village of Arkhipo-Osipovka in Russia’s Krasnodar region, a popular holiday destination known for its beaches and warm climate.
Regional Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said 17 of the injured were taken to the hospital and accused Ukraine of carrying out “a deliberate strike on civilians.” Ukrainian authorities had not commented on the incident at the time of publication.
Unclear Target
The intended target of the drone remains unknown.
Videos circulating on social media, verified by the BBC, showed a drone flying towards a cliffside before crashing into the beach in a large explosion as tourists watched from the shoreline and the sea.

Some Ukrainian Telegram channels claimed the drone may have been diverted after Russian electronic warfare systems jammed its navigation signal.
Russian media, citing eyewitnesses, reported hearing gunfire moments before the explosion, suggesting air defence forces may have attempted to shoot down the drone.
Residents and visitors told local media that no air raid sirens sounded before the incident.
“We covered ourselves with sun loungers and didn’t see where it exploded,” one tourist was quoted as saying.
Another witness said they heard “gunfire, like a machine gun,” followed by a powerful explosion.
A third eyewitness described the psychological impact on families at the beach.
“This all happened in front of my children. My child is having a nervous breakdown,” the person said.
Long-Range Drone Campaign
Ukraine has significantly expanded its long-range drone operations over the past year, striking targets deep inside Russian territory. Kyiv says such attacks are aimed at military or logistical infrastructure supporting Russia’s war effort.
The beach incident followed another reported drone strike early Tuesday on a warehouse facility near St Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city. Regional Governor Alexander Drozdenko confirmed the attack but did not identify the facility.
In recent weeks, Ukrainian drones have repeatedly targeted warehouses belonging to Wildberries, one of Russia’s largest online retailers. Kyiv alleges the company’s logistics network supports the Russian military, an accusation Moscow denies.
Civilian Toll on Both Sides
The latest incident comes as both Russia and Ukraine continue to accuse each other of attacks causing civilian casualties.
Russian authorities said eight civilians were killed in Ukrainian strikes across several Russian cities over the weekend.
Meanwhile, Ukraine says Russian missile and drone attacks continue to inflict heavy civilian losses. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said at least nine people were killed in Russian ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv on Saturday, while local officials reported additional fatalities in the Kryvyi Rih region following another Russian strike.
Both Moscow and Kyiv deny deliberately targeting civilians during the conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
