JOHANNESBURG: Getting rid of an insufferable husband is relatively cheap in South Africa, with political hits a bit more expensive as crime studies say a contract killer could be hired at anywhere between $145 and $8,700 in the country, where assassinations have come under a renewed spotlight after the murder of a popular rapper.
Kiernan Forbes, known as AKA, a renowned South African artist, was fatally shot outside a restaurant in the city of Durban earlier this month.
The 35-year-old was gunned down on a Friday night alongside his friend Tebello Motsoane or “Tibz”, 41, as they were walking toward their car along one of the most famous roads in the southeastern coastal city.
The entire nation was left in shock after the incident, which has grown accustomed to crime and violence.
A security camera captured the footage of AKA’s murder that went viral online. Police said they were following multiple leads, but everything points towards a target killing. No arrests have been made so far.
South Africa has the highest murder rates globally
South Africa has one of the highest murder rates in the world with only about one in five murder cases in the country solved, according to the latest annual police report.
With data released in February indicating there were an average of 82 murders per day across the country between October and December, with many killers still unidentified and at large. — AFP/APP
