WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has cautioned that China would face “big problems” if it proceeds with plans to supply weapons to Iran.
His remarks came in response to a CNN report citing US intelligence assessments that Beijing may be preparing to deliver advanced air defence systems to Tehran in the coming weeks.
According to the report, China could provide shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missile systems, commonly known as MANPADs, and may route the shipments through third countries to conceal their origin.
Speaking to reporters before departing the White House for Miami, Trump reiterated his warning but did not provide further details.
There was no immediate response from the US State Department, the Chinese embassy in Washington, or China’s foreign ministry.
The development comes as the United States and Iran continue high-level negotiations in Islamabad, Pakistan, aimed at ending their weeks-long conflict.
