ISLAMABAD: China on Wednesday warned that the Middle East stands at a “critical juncture,” urging restraint and renewed diplomatic engagement after United States President Donald Trump announced an extension to the ceasefire deadline.

In an official statement, China’s foreign ministry said the extension offers a narrow but vital window for de-escalation.

The situation remains fragile and could deteriorate rapidly if parties fail to exercise restraint, it added. Beijing stressed that military confrontation would only deepen instability in an already volatile region.

A foreign ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, said China “closely follows developments in the Middle East” and believes that dialogue and negotiation remain the only viable path forward.

The spokesperson called on all stakeholders to avoid actions that could inflame tensions and undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts.

The warning comes after President Trump announced that the ceasefire deadline, which was set to expire early Wednesday, would be extended.

The announcement came as a temporary pause in potential military escalation in the war with Iran. The move has drawn mixed reactions globally, with some viewing it as an opportunity for diplomacy and others questioning its effectiveness without concrete negotiations.

China reiterated its long-standing position advocating political solutions to regional disputes, emphasising respect for sovereignty and opposition to unilateral military actions.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry also underscored the importance of maintaining stability in key global energy corridors, warning that any disruption could have far-reaching economic consequences.

Beijing’s statement reflects growing international concern that the current pause in hostilities may not translate into lasting peace unless backed by substantive dialogue.

Analysts say China’s intervention signals its increasing diplomatic engagement in the region, particularly amid rising geopolitical competition and economic stakes tied to energy security.

Despite the ceasefire extension, tensions remain high, with both Washington and Tehran maintaining firm positions.

The absence of direct negotiations leaves the truce’s durability in question, raising fears that the situation could quickly revert to confrontation.

China urged the international community to play a constructive role in facilitating dialogue and preventing escalation, adding that “any further deterioration would not serve the interests of regional or global stability.”
