UNITED NATIONS: China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Zhang Jun has urged the United States and Western countries to swiftly remove sanctions imposed on the Afghan Taliban.

In addition, he has advocated for Afghanistan’s inclusion in regional economic and trade cooperation organizations.

Emphasizing the importance of dialogue and engagement with Kabul, Zhang highlighted the urgent need to address the funding shortfall for Afghanistan. He pointed out that the United Nations’ budget plan for the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan amounts to $3.2 billion. However, only 9% of this amount has been funded thus far.

Regarding sanctions, Zhang stated, “To facilitate dialogue and engagement, it is essential for the sanctions committee of the Security Council to establish a comprehensive exemption framework for international travel by officials of the caretaker government of Afghanistan. Sanctions imposed on officials of the Islamic Emirate by the UN Security Council should be adjusted or lifted promptly in accordance with the evolving situation.”

Furthermore, Zhang called for the immediate release of Afghanistan’s frozen foreign reserves by the United States.

The statements made by China’s Permanent Representative reflect their position on the ongoing situation in Afghanistan, where they advocate for the removal of sanctions and increased international support to address the pressing humanitarian and economic challenges faced by the country.
