BEIJING, China: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the crucial role of the UN Security Council and urged swift action from the global community while emphasizing objectivity and impartiality among major powers.
During a phone call with Israel’s Eli Cohen, Wang assured that China is committed to contributing to Palestinian-Israeli reconciliation.
Minister Wang Yi stated that China would firmly support any resolution conducive to peace, framing the ongoing conflict as a “major choice between war and peace.” Wang also urged Israel to take effective measures to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens and institutions in the Middle East. He emphasized that all nations possess the right to self-defense but should adhere to international humanitarian law to protect civilian safety.
China has expressed condemnation for violence and attacks on civilians in the conflict, with Wang Yi characterizing Israel’s actions as “beyond the scope of self-defense” without explicitly naming Hamas in his comments.
In a separate conversation with Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al Maliki, Wang expressed deep sympathy for the people of Gaza, highlighting their need for security and peace-promoting efforts rather than weapons or geopolitical considerations.
Minister Wang Yi called for the swift convening of a more authoritative, wide-ranging, and effective international peace conference to promote the resumption of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians. He emphasized the responsibility of the UN Security Council, urged urgent action from the international community, and called on major powers to maintain objectivity and impartiality.
It’s noteworthy that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has positioned China and Russia on one side, with the United States taking a different stance. China and Russia assert that the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people remain unmet, while the U.S. has expressed support for Israel’s right to defend itself, denouncing Hamas attacks.
