DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Saturday warned against foreign “force interference in Tanzania’s internal affairs” at the end of a visit to the East African country.
Tanzania witnessed widespread protests after the October 29, 2025, legislative and presidential elections.
Security forces’ crackdown on protesters sparked a wave of global criticism. The United States had warned of reassessing its bilateral relationship with the country.
In a statement shared after the visit, Tanzanian authorities said Wang had congratulated the country for the “successful conduct” of the elections.
“China reiterated its full confidence in Tanzania’s leadership and institutions to manage internal affairs independently,” they added.
Meanwhile, a Chinese foreign ministry statement said Beijing “opposes any external force interfering in Tanzania’s internal affairs” and stressed its support for the country’s “national sovereignty and security”.
After Tanzania, Wang is expected to continue his tour of African countries in Lesotho, where US tariffs have strained relations with Washington.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Saturday that China and Tanzania are friends with a shared future, and the friendship forged and nurtured by leaders of the older generation remains the most valuable spiritual asset of the two countries, official Xinhua news agency reported.
Wang made the remarks during a meeting with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Hassan thanked China for its strong support for Tanzania’s development under the framework of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.
The Tanzanian side firmly adheres to the one-China principle, Hassan said, adding that Tanzania is ready to align its development plans with China’s, deepen practical cooperation, advance the revitalization of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway and the building of a regional prosperity belt, strengthen inter-party exchanges, expand people-to-people interactions, and promote economic growth so as to bring benefits to the two peoples, Xinhua reported.
The two sides should actively promote high-quality cooperation and turn the revitalised Tanzania-Zambia Railway into an engine for regional development, Wang said.
