BEIJING: China has voiced “strong dissatisfaction” over reported incidents of fighting in Myanmar causing casualties in Chinese territory on Thursday. The conflict in Myanmar’s northern Shan state involving ethnic minority groups has been ongoing since October. Recent reports suggest that an artillery shell from Myanmar landed in China’s Yunnan province, exploding in the town of Nansan and causing injuries to several individuals.
Chinese media outlets covered the incident, sharing images on social media, although the reports have not been independently verified by AFP. China’s foreign ministry spokesman, Wang Wenbin, stated that China has expressed strong dissatisfaction over the situation, making solemn representations to the relevant parties. He demanded an immediate cessation of hostilities in northern Myanmar and practical measures to prevent further incidents threatening border peace.
Wang emphasized that China would take all necessary measures to protect the security of its citizens’ lives and property. The ethnic alliance involved in the conflict has captured key towns and border hubs crucial for trade with China. Despite China’s mediation efforts and the announcement of a “temporary ceasefire” last month, clashes persist in parts of Shan state.
China’s embassy had previously advised its citizens to evacuate areas along the shared border due to security risks. The incident adds to the complexity of regional dynamics, as neighboring countries closely monitor developments in Myanmar amid ongoing political and military challenges.
