BEIJING: China has pledged continued support for Cuba and condemned what it described as “power politics and bullying” during talks between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Cuban counterpart Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla in New York.
According to Chinese state media, Wang reaffirmed Beijing’s backing for Havana as Cuba faces mounting economic and political pressure from the United States.
“China will continue to uphold justice and speak out on Cuba’s behalf,” Wang said during the meeting, adding that Beijing would support efforts to improve Cuba’s economy and people’s livelihoods.
He also stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty and independence of all countries and opposing “all forms of power politics and bullying,” in remarks widely viewed as directed at Washington.
Cuba has been struggling with severe economic challenges and energy shortages amid tightened US sanctions and restrictions. President Donald Trump has also publicly suggested the possibility of taking control of the island nation, further escalating tensions.
China recently pledged to donate 60,000 tonnes of rice to help address food shortages on the island. The first shipment arrived in Cuba earlier this week.
China’s foreign ministry has urged Washington to stop using legal pressure and threats against Cuba and to refrain from interfering in the country’s internal affairs.
