OTTAWA: Canada will halt direct development help to Niger in reply to the attempted military coup in the West African country, Candia’s government said on Saturday. A military regime overthrew Niger’s elected President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26, the 7th military takeover during last three years in Central and West Africa.
Canada Halts Direct Development Help to Niger
In a statement, Canada’s Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said, “Canada stands with world and also expresses its backing to the ECOWAS mediation efforts for the restoration of constitutional order in the African country.”
The Minister said that the democratically elected government should be restored immediately.
The statement maintained that the deferral will include Canada’s direct budgetary help to the Niger’s government.

Earlier, European Union and Algeria urged for political and diplomatic pressures to press Niger to restore democracy in the country. However, Algeria’s President said that his country will oppose armed intervention in Niger.
Similarly, pressure on the military leadership of a military coup in the African country mounted on August, 5 the eve of a West African alliance’s deadline for the military regime to restore constitution or face a possible armed interference.
