LONDON: In a remarkable turn of events, Britain’s main opposition Labour Party emerged victorious in a crucial special election for a Scottish district, proving to be a promising indicator of the party’s resurging popularity in the lead-up to the national election scheduled for the following year.

The Labour Party managed to secure the parliamentary seat of Rutherglen and Hamilton West, situated near Glasgow, wresting it from the grasp of the Scottish National Party (SNP). This triumph marked a substantial increase in Labour’s Scottish representation, doubling their total number of seats from one to two.

Michael Shanks, the Labour candidate, garnered an impressive 17,845 votes, surpassing the SNP runner-up Katy Loudon by more than twice the margin. The Scottish Conservatives trailed far behind in third place. The Labour Party’s leader, Keir Starmer, hailed this outcome as a “seismic result.”

The election was prompted by the ousting of former lawmaker Margaret Ferrier, who had violated coronavirus restrictions in 2020 by embarking on a lengthy train journey while infected with COVID-19.

Labour Party’s performance in recent years

Once a dominant force in Scottish politics, the Labour Party had experienced a substantial decline over the past 15 years, largely overshadowed by the SNP, which advocates for Scottish independence from the United Kingdom.

To secure a majority of seats in the upcoming general election, scheduled by the end of 2024, Starmer’s Labour Party must regain its footing in Scotland. Labour has been out of power since 2010, but recent polls have indicated a 15 to 20 point lead over Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives, amidst a challenging cost-of-living crisis and a stagnant economy.

John Curtice, a polling expert from the University of Strathclyde, expressed optimism regarding Labour’s prospects, suggesting that the party could potentially win around two dozen of Scotland’s 59 seats in the 650-seat UK Parliament. He emphasized that this projection seems attainable, especially in light of the promising result of this significant by-election.
