WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden is aiming to secure his re-election next year by placing a major emphasis on the US economy with the unveiling of his “Bidenomics” pitch to voters this week.

In the face of a pandemic-ravaged economy, persistent inflation, and supply chain challenges, Biden has faced difficulties in convincing Americans of his administration’s economic progress. Recent polls have even shown his Republican predecessor, Donald Trump, leading by a significant margin in terms of who handled the economy better.

With a rebranding launch centered around Biden’s speech in Chicago on Wednesday, the White House is hopeful that it can turn the tide. “Bidenomics” has become the buzzword, with Principal Deputy Press Secretary Olivia Dalton describing it as the focus of the White House for the foreseeable future.

The term is intentionally reminiscent of the Reagan era’s “Reaganomics,” but the White House aims to reject and bury that approach. Lael Brainard, director of the National Economic Council, emphasized that Biden has rejected trickle-down economics and the notion that tax cuts for the wealthy would benefit all. Instead, the focus of Bidenomics is on growing the economy by strengthening the middle class.

Biden’s key claim is that the significant government spending programs implemented during his first term will stimulate long-term expansion, leading to the revitalization of US manufacturing capabilities and the improvement of living standards for less affluent Americans. This argument not only holds economic implications but also serves as a potential political roadmap for victory in the upcoming election, where Democrats and Republicans will vie for support from swing state voters.

Central to Biden’s pitch is his list of legislative accomplishments in the past two years. Congress has passed major bills directing historic amounts of funding toward green energy technology, semiconductors, and infrastructure, including over $550 billion for the modernization of roads, bridges, and other critical assets.

Biden Struggles to Gain Recognition for Positive State of Economy

Brainard highlighted how the Reagan-era approach resulted in the decline of US industrial cities due to offshoring and neglected infrastructure upgrades. In contrast, Biden’s tax-funded industrial policy aims to use government investment as a catalyst for private sector spending and a resurgence in manufacturing and construction. She drew parallels between Biden’s commitment to expanding broadband internet access across the nation and Franklin Roosevelt’s electrification program in the 1930s.

However, despite these efforts, Biden has struggled to gain recognition for the positive state of the economy and low unemployment rates. Concerns over inflation continue to weigh on voters’ minds, despite its gradual decline in recent months.

Dalton expressed confidence that public perception would change as projects funded by Biden’s programs begin to take effect. She pointed to the visible signs of progress, such as infrastructure projects breaking ground and renewed private investment flowing into the country, ultimately leading to the creation of millions of jobs. Dalton stated that now is the opportune time for President Biden to share his message with the American people, highlighting the impact of Bidenomics. “We’re just starting to feel the impact,” Dalton concluded.
