SYDNEY (Xinhua/APP)Woolworths, a major Australian supermarket chain, announced on Monday that tearless onions would be available for purchase at its stores in New South Wales, Victoria, and the Australian Capital Territory beginning on Wednesday and continuing through September.
Woolworths said that its new, exclusive onion variety “doesn’t have the same tendency to make you cry when you cut it” as other onions.
It is claimed that less of the volatile compounds (natural chemicals and enzymes) that can cause tears and irritation are present in the tearless variety.
Also, unlike regular onions, where these compounds increase with age, the tear-inducing compounds in tearless onions continue to decrease after harvest.
