Around Half of Afghan Population Living in Poverty: World Bank

KABUL: In its latest report known as the “Afghanistan Economic Monitor,” the World Bank has reported that half of all people are living in poverty in the country, local media reported on Thursday.

The report stated that total exports amounted to 1.3 billion dollars from January to September 2023, marking a small decrease of 0.5 per cent compared to the same period in last year. According to the World Bank report, Pakistan remains largest export market for Afghanistan, accounting for about 55 percent of total exports.

Half of Afghan Population Below Poverty Line

The report maintained that imports reached 5.7 billion dollars, showing a 27 percent increase. Khairuddin Maiel, an official of Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment said that in these nine months, their exports have declined, and the reason for the decline was that they did not export coal from Afghanistan.

Similarly, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the WFP said that severe food uncertainty is likely to deteriorate the situation in the country.

Earlier, the World Bank (WB) reported that Afghanistan’s economy had deteriorated and the unemployment rate in the war-hit country had doubled.
