ISLAMABAD: Former Afghan lawmaker Amanullah Paiman has said opponents of the Taliban will use every opportunity to challenge the group and cooperate with countries supporting what he described as the “just struggle of the Afghan people”.

Paiman made the remarks while speaking at the international conference titled “Afghan Predicament and the Trajectory to Peace” held in Islamabad.

Speaking to Afghanistan International, Paiman said Taliban opponents were working to convince regional countries and the international community that continued Taliban rule was not in the interest of Afghanistan or the wider region.

“We will cooperate with any country that supports the just struggle of the Afghan people,” he said, adding that resistance movements and Taliban opponents would use available opportunities to achieve their objectives.

He said that the Taliban posed a major security challenge for Pakistan and said he had raised the issue during the Islamabad conference.

The former MP also criticised the situation in Afghanistan under Taliban rule, saying many Afghans were facing difficulties and that opponents of the group were seeking support from countries in the region and beyond.

Paiman accused the Taliban of undermining Afghanistan’s cultural heritage and said the group had targeted cultural symbols, including the Persian language.

A final statement issued by conference organisers criticised the Taliban administration, describing it as lacking inclusiveness and political legitimacy. The statement also said that several ethnic communities in Afghanistan remained excluded from government participation.
