MOSCOW: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu delivered strong criticisms of the West and discussed the conflict in Ukraine during the Moscow Conference on International Security (MCIS) on Tuesday.

Lavrov accused the West of causing crises in multiple countries across the world and exploiting international organizations for its own interests. He specifically highlighted NATO’s expansion eastward within Europe, which he argued contradicted agreements concerning the continent’s security. Lavrov also criticized the US for undermining the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons by supporting Ukrainian forces in their conflict with Russia. He stated that the West’s stance on the Ukrainian conflict had negative implications for international law and stability.

Lavrov further accused the West of hypocrisy, citing its support for the coup in Ukraine in 2014 while opposing a similar situation in Niger. He emphasized that the current geopolitical situation hampers efforts to collaborate on addressing global threats, particularly international terrorism and extremist groups such as ISIS and Al-Qaeda.

Russia Exposes Vulnerability in Western Weapons

In a separate address at the same conference, Russia’s Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu discussed the conflict in Ukraine. He stated that Ukraine’s military resources were nearly depleted due to the ongoing conflict. Shoigu also asserted that the Russian army had exposed vulnerabilities in Western weapons systems through its actions in the conflict. He mentioned the destruction of German tanks, American armored vehicles, British missiles, and other weapons systems as examples.

Shoigu indicated that Moscow was willing to share its assessments of Western weapons system vulnerabilities with its partners. He emphasized that the Russian military’s actions had challenged the perception of Western military standards.

The Moscow Conference on International Security provided a platform for Russian officials to express their perspectives on global security issues and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
