BEIRUT: In a tragic incident that highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Syria, at least 23 soldiers lost their lives in the eastern part of the conflict-ravaged nation.

The attack, which occurred on Thursday, targeted an army bus and has been attributed to militants belonging to the Daesh group, according to a report from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights on Friday.

The assault took place in Deir Ezzor province, where remnants of the Daesh group have been persistently engaging in acts of violence. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based organization relying on a network of sources within Syria, disclosed that the militants carried out a deliberate strike on a military bus, resulting in the tragic demise of 23 soldiers. Additionally, more than 10 others were wounded in the attack, some of whom are reportedly in critical condition. Disturbingly, the Observatory also noted that numerous soldiers are currently unaccounted for, sparking further concern.

Although the Daesh group suffered significant territorial losses in 2019, they have continued to maintain a presence in the expansive Syrian desert. This has enabled them to execute ambushes and hit-and-run assaults, contributing to a persistent state of instability in the region. The recent surge in attacks by Daesh members in Syria’s northern and northeastern areas has intensified concerns over the group’s ability to carry out deadly actions despite losing its main stronghold.

Earlier this week, an attack attributed to Daesh claimed the lives of ten Syrian soldiers and pro-government fighters in Raqqa province, which once served as a stronghold for the jihadist group. This grim incident underscored the group’s capacity to inflict harm even in areas that were previously considered less vulnerable.

The renewed activity of Daesh within Syria has brought to the forefront the ongoing security challenges faced by the nation. Efforts to quell their resurgence remain a top priority for the Syrian government and its allies. As the situation unfolds, it is imperative for both regional and international stakeholders to collaborate closely in order to address the persistent threat posed by these militant groups and prevent further loss of life.
