NEW YORK: A United Nations spokesperson has reiterated the world body’s concerns over the deteriorating human rights situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

The UN Deputy Spokesperson, Farhan Haq, made the remarks while responding to a question about India’s unilateral action, which changed the special status of IIOJK on August 5, 2019, against the UN resolutions and international law.

Modi-led government of India had revoked Articles 370 and 35A, stripping occupied Jammu Kashmir of its special status.

India’s claim of “normalcy” in IIOJK rejected

Farhan Haq said: I would reiterate the concerns we have expressed, including through the office of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, concerning the human rights situation in IIOJK.

The diplomat said that the UN’s statement expressing concern over the human rights situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Kashmir clearly rejects India’s claim of “normalcy” in the disputed territory.

Kashmiris and Pakistanis all over the world observed the fourth anniversary of India’s brutal siege of Kashmir on August 5, asking the UN to implement its resolutions that grant the right of self-determination to the Kashmiri people.

Earlier, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Munir Akram, had dismissed India’s claims of progress, development, and normalcy in the disputed territory as “a fantasy and a myth.”

He emphasized that since August 2019, human rights abuses, violence, and restrictions on freedoms had intensified, refuting India’s narrative of normalcy in the region.
