ISLAMABAD: Karachi Shipyard witnessed a momentous event Wednesday as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz jointly launched the fourth MILGEM Class Corvette – PNS Tariq.

The MILGEM project, initiated in 2018, has been a testament to the strong collaboration between Pakistan and Turkey in the maritime domain.

The project aims to construct four Corvettes for the Pakistan Navy, with two being built in Pakistan and the other two in Turkiye.

This joint venture signifies the deep-rooted friendship and strategic partnership between the two nations, with both leaders emphasizing the importance of bolstering their naval capabilities. The MILGEM project stands as a tangible representation of the commitment towards self-reliance and indigenization, addressing the critical security needs of the Pakistan Navy.

The launching ceremony held in Istanbul last year saw the unveiling of the third Naval Corvette, PNS Khyber, by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, further strengthening the maritime cooperation between the two countries. Before that, the first two Corvettes, PNS Babur and PNS Badar, were launched in August 2021 and May 2022, respectively, showcasing the dedication and swift progress of the project.

The MILGEM Class Corvette serves as a state-of-the-art naval platform that embodies cutting-edge technology and advanced capabilities. With its completion, Pakistan Navy will bolster its maritime defence and surveillance capabilities, ensuring a safer and more secure maritime environment in the region.
