Afghan Acting FM Leaves for Qatar to Meet US Officials

KABUL: Afghan Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs Amir Khan Muttaqi, heading a delegation, left Kabul for Doha on Saturday afternoon to hold talks with US officials on several key issues, a top Afghan official said.

Afghanistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs Deputy Spokesperson Hafiz Zia Ahmad Takal said that Amir Khan Muttaqi would discuss key issues, including releasing Afghanistan’s bank reserves, ending sanctions and blacklists, and stopping violations of Afghanistan’s airspace.

Wahid Faqiri, a political analyst, said that the US officials would probably ask Kabul to bring changes to its policies.

Earlier, the US State Department said that US special representative for Afghanistan, Thomas West, and US special representative for Afghan women, and human rights would visit Doha and Astana. The statement maintained that the US officials would meet with Afghan Taliban officials in Doha.

Similarly, the interim Taliban administration in Afghanistan also officially confirmed a meeting between its top diplomat and US officials in Doha, Qatar, scheduled for later this week. Abdul Qahar Balkhi, the spokesman for the interim Afghan Foreign Ministry, revealed that acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, along with a high-level delegation, will travel to Doha to hold talks with US representatives.
