WASHINGTON: The United States is poised to unveil a military assistance package worth more than $300 million to Taiwan, a move expected to be announced as early as Friday, according to two US officials who spoke to Reuters. This development is likely to raise tensions with China, as it views Taiwan as part of its territory.

While the White House has declined to comment on the matter, sources have revealed that the package is expected to include four unarmed MQ-9A reconnaissance drones. However, the inclusion of these drones may be subject to adjustments, as officials are working to remove certain advanced equipment accessible only to the US Air Force.

Taiwan, a democratic nation, firmly rejects China’s claims of sovereignty and emphasizes that its future should be determined by the Taiwanese people. Nevertheless, China has been ramping up military pressure on the island in recent years, and it has not ruled out using force to bring Taiwan under its control.

US Aims to Bolster Taiwan’s Defense Capabilities

The announcement of this significant military assistance package to Taiwan comes after calls from top US officials and allies to expedite the delivery of weapons to bolster Taiwan’s defense capabilities. The move is seen as a measure to support Taiwan in countering China’s increased military presence and to fortify its sovereignty.

As the US prepares to disclose the specifics of the military assistance, it is expected to trigger a strong reaction from China, which has consistently opposed any actions it perceives as challenging its claims over Taiwan.

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States did not immediately respond to requests for comments on the upcoming military aid package.
