ISLAMABAD: The IMF deal (Staff-level agreement) is undoubtedly a highly positive development in an otherwise challenging economic environment which is likely to fetch additional $10 billion from other sources.
The $3 billion to be provided by the IMF will serve as a catalyst, unlocking an additional $10 billion or more from other sources, according to the sources. They said the establishment played a crucial role in pushing for the IMF path, as did Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
It must be acknowledged that the primary beneficiary of this deal will be PM Sharif, who managed to secure it when it seemed almost impossible. This agreement signifies that we have been given a lifeline to address our long-standing structural issues.
However, it is important to recognize that we still face a daunting task of living as a financially responsible and disciplined nation. The implementation of Apex committees is a necessary long-term solution.
All the talk of default and comparisons to Sri Lanka, along with the political gloom, are now likely to see an end. The unsung heroes deserve the gratitude who made this achievement possible.
