TUNIS: Head of National Salvation Front Ahmed Nejb Chebbi has accused Tunisian President Kais Saied of “criminalizing” all opposition workers in the African country, western media reported on Saturday. The authorities summoned him for questioning over allegations of conspiracy against the state.
“Today, as you can observe, all types of opposition, independent views, and opinion are considered a crime,” Chebbi told the media before being questioned by investigators for three hours. He said, “In Saied’s Tunisia, the home of free men is in prison.” The opposition leader also questioned the reason behind his questioning.

Chebbi accused President Saied on Friday of having “ruined all institutions” and said he was not aiming for “the rights and freedoms of people.”
Earlier, Amnesty International denounced plans to summon Ahmed Nejb Chebbi for questioning “over groundless allegations of conspiracy.” AI said that the plan “is another step backward on human rights,”.
Police in the African country have arrested over 20 opposition leaders including Rached Ghanouchi since February, including former ministers, trade unionists, and journalists. President Saied won a victory in 2019 presidential elections but assumed extensive powers in July 2021.
