BRUSSELS: NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will visit Ankara at the weekend to attend the inauguration of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and hold dialogue with him, the NATO alliance said Friday.

The visit comes as pressure builds on President Erdogan to drop his strong opposition to Sweden joining the military alliance. Stoltenberg said he would soon visit Türkiye to work towards Sweden joining.
The head of Türkiye’s Election Commission announced on Sunday that Erdogan had been re-elected as the country’s President. The Commission said that Erdogan won Türkiye’s presidency over opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu in the 2nd-round runoff vote. The chief of the Election Commission said that the current President won the contest with 52.14 percent, while Kilicdaroglu got 47.86 percent of the votes following counting 99.43 percent of the votes.
