ISLAMABAD: Hypertension, often referred to as the silent killer and considered the underlying cause of major diseases, is largely underestimated by the majority of those affected.

Medical experts from Lahore General Hospital (LGH) expressed these concerns during a meeting held on Wednesday. They emphasized that hypertension, or high blood pressure, poses significant risks to individuals, families, and society as a whole, yet its devastating effects often go unnoticed.

Hypertension is particularly alarming due to its lack of noticeable symptoms, leading to heart attacks and kidney diseases among almost 70% of the population in Pakistan who remain unaware of their condition.

Dr. Al-Fareed Zafar, Principal Professor at the Post Graduate Medical Institute (PGMI), highlighted the high prevalence of hypertension cases in Pakistan.

Limited Access to Resources Can Cause Hypertension

He attributed this to the limited access people have to resources necessary for developing healthy habits. Notably, he pointed out that women’s blood pressure is increasing at a faster rate than men’s nationwide.

Dr. Zafar emphasized the significant influence of environmental culture on individuals’ natural tendencies and hygiene, which can contribute to high blood pressure.

He stated that when the surrounding environment improves and individuals maintain moderation and balance in their lives, their physical and bodily systems are more likely to function optimally.

A healthy environment can help control blood pressure and prevent other ailments. He further recommended incorporating a basic diet, daily walks or light exercise, engagement in sports activities like cycling and swimming, to help individuals maintain fitness.

The principal urged citizens to prioritize light exercise and daily walks, seek balance and moderation in their emotions, thoughts, feelings, and behavior, avoid unnecessary conflicts within households, share in the happiness of others, take pride in their achievements, and assist others whenever possible.

He emphasized that adopting a healthy and balanced mindset, attitude, and diet can significantly reduce the risk of debilitating diseases such as high blood pressure.
