KARACHI: The remaining 11 Union Councils (UCs) of Karachi, where elections were postponed due to the deaths of candidates, are holding by-elections today.
Around 580,000 residents of these UCs will exercise their right to vote and choose their local representatives. A total of 235 candidates from various political parties are contesting these by-elections in Karachi.
Polling began at 9 am and will continue until 5 pm without any interruptions. The police have assured the public of foolproof security arrangements during the elections. A total of 302 polling stations have been set up in 172 buildings to facilitate the voting process.
The by-elections will take place in UC-1 and UC-2 of Orangi Town, UC-8 of Mominabad in District West, UC-2 of Korangi in Korangi District, UC-8 of Landhi, and UC-2 of Shah Faisal Town.
Additionally, UC-4 and UC-13 of New Karachi, UC-6 of North Nazimabad in District Central, UC-2 of Baldia Town in District Kemari, and UC-2 of Lyari Town in District South will also observe by-elections today.
Security arrangements for Karachi elections
A total of 7,000 policemen have been assigned to election duties, with Rangers also present at the most sensitive polling stations.
Security personnel will be deployed, with 12 policemen assigned to each of the most sensitive polling stations and 10 stationed at sensitive polling stations. The police will also establish a Quick Response Force (QRF) to handle any extraordinary circumstances.
These by-elections hold significant importance as they are a crucial factor in the subsequent election of the Mayor of Karachi. The pending elections have caused delays and uncertainty in the mayoral election process.
The outcome of these by-elections could potentially reshape the current status quo and provide a new ray of hope for the distressed population of the city, who are demanding their legitimate rights, improved living standards, and access to basic utilities.
Given the nature of by-elections, the voter turnout is expected to be relatively low. However, these elections present an opportunity for the residents of Karachi to bring about change and address their concerns by electing capable representatives who can advocate for their interests and work towards the betterment of the city.
