RIYADH: Following the approval of the Saudi Committee for Stratigraphy (SCS), the Saudi Geological Survey, better known as the SGS, has started research on sedimentary sequences in the country.

The study will assist researchers to determine the stratigraphic sequences of sedimentary rocks and sedimentary environments as well as various geological structures due to their role in facilitating mineral exploration in Saudi Arabia.

SGS spokesperson Tariq Aba Al-Khail said the committee had released a unified geological column for sedimentary sequences covering 541 million years, from the Paleozoic to the modern era, Arab News reported.

The committee comprises officials from King Saud University, King Abdulaziz University, Taibah University, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Saudi Aramco, King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals.

The sequences can refer to these periods through their sedimentary covers, as well as their divisions and different ages, which explain the sedimentary environments hosting basic and industrial metals existing in the country. This includes radioactive elements like thorium, uranium, and rare earth elements.

They would also contribute to determining the water reservoirs’ geology and their role in exploring the largest hydrocarbon reserves in the world.
