RIYADH: A top official of the UN World Food Program has lauded the Kingdom Saudi Arabia (KSA) for its vital support in fighting poverty and food insecurity in the region.
UN World Food Program Regional director Corinne Fleischer said that the relations between the KSA and the WFP dated back over 45 years and that help made via the King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Aid had saved lives in Syria, Yemen, and elsewhere.
She said that in 2008, Riyadh announced a $500 million grant to the UN World Food Program, which had enabled the organization to complete its projects and supply food to millions of people.
She maintained that in 2014, the KSA contributed over $200 million to supply food for displaced people in Iraq, Syrian, South Sudan and Somalia.
KSA-WFP
WFP’s food and KSA recently helped to prevent eradicate famine-like situations for 161,000 people in Yemen, she added.
Fleischer maintained that Riyadh was the WFP’s 5th largest donor in 2018-19. She said that they are working closely with KSrelief to improve their collaboration and enhance partnership. The regional director added that they rely on the KSA’s support to help WFP to achieve its mission in the regional and international level.
She said that the KSA and WFP partnership is built on jointly addressing most pressing humanitarian problems with a methodical method that supports WFP’s agenda while also reflecting Riyadh’s priorities in this space.
The UN official is leading a high level delegation to KSA to provide an update on the humanitarian situation in the region. The delegates also held meeting with the leaders of the Evacuation and Humanitarian Operations Cell to express their special thanks for its continued assistance for the WFP’s work and support in Yemen.
