WASHINGTON: A South Carolina lawyer has been found guilty of killing his wife and son to divert from his multi-million-dollar financial crimes, US media reported on Thursday. The jury pondered for less than 3 hours before finding Alex Murdaugh, guilty of two counts of killing at the end of a 6-week trial. Alex Murdaugh faces 30 years to life in prison without bail for each murder charge.

He had begged not guilty to killing his son and wife, Maggie, in an attempt to hide years of financial crimes, which Alex Murdaugh himself had accepted in court, forcefully asserting he would “never” harm his family.

The prosecution’s case against Alex Murdaugh was based totally on circumstantial evidence. No direct evidence like a murder weapon, blood, and eyewitness – was presented at trial. But the prosecution focused on an incriminating social media video taken by his son just before the killings.
