ISLAMABAD: War-torn Syria witnessed the arrival of the first United Nations (UN) convoy, which crossed from Turkiye, carrying aid for Syrians who were devastated three days ago by a deadly earthquake, said witnesses and a border official.

The convoy used the Bab Al Hawa crossing for entering Syria and Turkish authorities said that other crossings would be opened in a couple of days if security was sound.
UN envoy said civilians in Syria need absolutely everything
The UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pederson, earlier stated that, in terms of aid, “absolutely everything” was needed.
Bab Al Hawa has been described by the UN as a lifeline for accessing the area of Syria that is controlled by the opposition where it says around 4 million people already rely on humanitarian assistance due to the ongoing conflict in the country.
In Geneva, Pederson while talking to reporters said “lifesaving aid” is needed. She added irrespective of borders and boundaries, such aid is desperately needed by civilians. The aid needs to be delivered via the most effective, most direct, and fastest routes as they need more of everything and more.
Pedersen sought assurances that political hindrances inside Syria would not impede the delivery of aid where civilians needed it most.
