MOSCOW: A drone struck a data centre belonging to Russia’s largest bank, Sberbank, in the southern city of Balakovo, a company executive said on Wednesday, adding that all banking systems and services remained operational.

Sberbank deputy chairman Alexander Vedyakhin confirmed the attack, according to Russia’s state-owned TASS news agency. He said the incident had not disrupted the bank’s systems or services.

The strike appears to be part of a wider campaign of Ukrainian attacks on Russian digital infrastructure. Yandex, Russia’s largest technology company, has reported at least three drone strikes on its data centres since the beginning of October.

Roman Busargin, governor of the region where Balakovo is located, said a Ukrainian drone strike had killed one person early on Wednesday. Ukraine had not immediately commented on the reported attack. Russia’s Defence Ministry said Ukraine had launched more than 900 drones at Russia and the annexed Crimean peninsula overnight.

The latest incident comes as Moscow and Kyiv intensify long-range attacks on each other’s infrastructure. Russian forces have also targeted Ukrainian data centres and logistics hubs in recent months, adding to concerns over the vulnerability of critical infrastructure during the war.
