ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has urged the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to abandon its agitational politics and call off its long march, warning that dialogue can take place only if the party ends its ongoing protests. He cautioned that continued political agitation could undermine Pakistan’s economic progress and damage its international standing.
At the groundbreaking ceremony for the Kashmir Chowk Underpass in Islamabad, Mr Shehbaz urged the PTI to end its march and return to the negotiating table.
“I still ask them to come to their senses. End your long marches and sit-ins. Once you end them, we will sit down with you and talk so Pakistan can move forward with mutual hard work, honesty, and integrity. This is the desire of the nation, the voice of every Pakistani,” the prime minister said.

The offer came as a PTI long march led by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi continued its journey towards Islamabad.
Minister for Interior Mohsin Naqvi, Information and Broadcasting Minister Attaullah Tarar, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, and Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, Chairman of Capital Development Authority Sohail Ashraf attended the ceremony, along with parliamentarians and notables from different walks of life.
Talks Broke Down
He said that a joint committee comprising representatives from the PML-N and the Pakistan Peoples Party had held talks with the opposition, but the process stalled after the PTI demanded last-minute changes to the finalised draft, indicating that their sole objective was to sabotage the dialogue.

“As a result of the politics of sit-ins and long marches, the primary target will be your economy. There will be disruptions in your exports, your manufacturing, and your imports. If your labourer or your engineer fails to reach the factory, the manufacturing site, or their office on time, whose loss is it? It is the loss of this nation, the loss of this country,” the prime minister said.
The breakdown has centred in particular on disagreements over counter-terrorism measures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and PTI’s demands concerning its founder, Imran Khan.
Economy At Risk
Mr Shehbaz warned that prolonged protests and road blockades could disrupt economic activity, including manufacturing, exports and the movement of workers.
He said that the government had successfully restored macroeconomic stability and was striving for growth through collective teamwork, with positive indicators reflected in rising exports, remittances, and industrial production.
He cautioned that undermining these hard-won achievements would amount to hostility toward the state. “We will not allow this to happen. The law will take its course. Protecting the lives and property of the people is our responsibility, and we will ensure this by all means,” he resolved.
“There is no doubt that the first target of this sit-in and long-march politics will be your economy,” he said.
The prime minister said the government had spent the past one-and-a-half years working to stabilise the economy and argued that recent improvements in exports, IT exports, remittances and domestic production showed signs of progress.
“Do you want to damage this? Do you want to harm Pakistan’s progress?” he asked.
He also warned that the government would not allow public safety and property to be put at risk, saying the law would take its course.
“The lives of the people, the protection of the wealth, this is our responsibility. We will ensure it in every way,” he said.
The PTI long march has continued moving through Khyber Pakhtunkhwa despite the government’s warnings that the protest would not be allowed to enter Islamabad.
The convoy reached Kohat after passing through Lakki Marwat and Karak, with the next stages of the planned route taking it towards Peshawar and then onwards towards Punjab.
The government, meanwhile, has repeatedly called for the protest to be called off before talks can resume. Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry said political and constitutional options were available, but that dialogue remained conditional on the PTI ending its marches and protests.
