RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Transport General Authority (TGA) has launched Riyadh’s first pilot project for delivery operations using self-driving vehicles, as part of efforts to adopt advanced technologies and develop innovative solutions in the transport and logistics sectors.

Pilot project begins in Al-Falah

The self-driving delivery vehicles are operating within a designated area in Riyadh’s Al-Falah district. The process begins with an electronic order, which is then loaded onto a vehicle that autonomously transports it to the recipient, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

Level 4 autonomous technology

The vehicles use Level 4 autonomous driving technology, supported by 360-degree sensor coverage and real-time monitoring from a remote operations centre. They are also equipped to stop immediately in an emergency, according to SPA.

Lower costs and emissions

The TGA aims to reduce delivery costs by up to 85% through the use of an electric fleet that produces zero carbon emissions during operation while also reducing street noise.

The Saudi authority added that the pilot is part of its strategy to create a regulatory environment for modern technologies in the transport sector and to develop more efficient, sustainable last-mile solutions, with plans to gradually expand the service in future phases.
