ARUSHA, Tanzania: Pakistan has extended its full support to Bangladesh’s candidate, Jasharat Adib Chowdhury, for membership of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) during the 153rd IPU Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania.
The Pakistani parliamentary delegation, led by Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, backed Chowdhury’s candidature during a meeting of the Asia-Pacific Group held on the sidelines of the IPU Assembly on Monday.
Chowdhury subsequently secured a majority of votes and was elected to the IPU Executive Committee.
Congratulating Chowdhury and the Bangladeshi delegation, Gilani said Pakistan attached great importance to its relations with Bangladesh and looked forward to further strengthening parliamentary engagement between the two countries.

“Pakistan believes in strengthening cooperation among the parliaments of the Asia-Pacific region and ensuring that our collective voice is effectively represented in international parliamentary forums,” he said.
The Senate chairman said parliamentary diplomacy remained an important instrument for promoting dialogue, mutual understanding and cooperation on shared regional and global challenges.
Pakistan’s support for Bangladesh’s candidature, he added, reflected its commitment to regional cooperation and stronger representation of the Asia-Pacific region within the IPU.
