WASHINGTON: The United States (US) has expelled two members of Iran’s delegation to the United Nations General Assembly after they ignored an order to leave the country, the State Department said on Saturday.

According to a US official, the two Iranian delegates were found still in New York after the UN General Assembly had ended and had now been expelled from the United States.

“Two more members of the Iranian delegation were found still in New York long after the United Nations General Assembly had passed. They have now been expelled from the US,” the official said, adding that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio “means business”.

US media reported that the State Department had ordered Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his delegation to leave the country on Monday. Araghchi had already left New York with the main delegation earlier.

The department decided to expel the two members after Iran’s UN mission informed US authorities on Friday that they were still in the country, according to reports.

One of the delegates left the US on Friday night, while the other departed on Saturday morning, according to media reports. US and Iranian officials had met in New York the previous week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

The expulsions came amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran over the Strait of Hormuz. US President Donald Trump had rejected a proposal from Tehran to reopen the strategic waterway but said he expected talks with Iran to resume in the coming days.

Iran’s state news agency IRNA, however, reported that Tehran had no further direct talks with Washington scheduled.
