NEW YORK: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in New York on Monday to attend the high-level segment of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where he is scheduled to address the gathering on September 25.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Prime Minister Sharif will also hold bilateral meetings with world leaders and participate in high-level events on the sidelines of the UNGA session, which runs from September 21 to 25.

On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, PM Sharif will hold bilateral meetings with world leaders and participate in high-level events. He will also present Pakistan’s perspective on regional and global developments and highlight the country’s priorities at the UN General Assembly.
Prime Minister Sharif was received at the airport by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar arrived in New York ahead of the Prime Minister to participate in the UNGA session, the Foreign Office said on Monday.
On the sidelines of the session, Deputy PM Dar met with France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, where the two reviewed Pakistan-France bilateral relations and exchanged views on regional and global developments.
According to the Foreign Office, Deputy PM Dar “reiterated Pakistan’s desire to further strengthen bilateral ties, including through enhanced political engagement, trade and investment, educational linkages and people-to-people exchanges”.
The two leaders also discussed Palestine, stressing that the issue must remain “high on the international agenda”. Deputy PM Dar appreciated France’s efforts to support the two-state solution.
French Foreign Minister Barrot, meanwhile, appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts for peace and stability in the region.

On the topic of Iran, “both sides exchanged views on the importance of continued diplomatic engagement and regional efforts to address the crisis, and highlighted the importance of implementing the Islamabad MoU”. They also stressed the need to ensure the “safety and free flow” of maritime traffic and uninterrupted energy supplies.
The French foreign minister agreed on the importance of utilising regional forums to address regional challenges and promote dialogue, the Foreign Office statement added.
Separately, Deputy PM Dar also met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr Badr Abdelatty. The two foreign ministers reaffirmed the longstanding fraternal ties between Pakistan and Egypt and expressed commitment to further strengthening bilateral cooperation in “diverse areas, including trade and investment, economic cooperation, education, cultural exchanges and people-to-people contacts”, the Foreign Office said.
They also discussed regional and international developments, including the situation in the Middle East. They reaffirmed the importance of continued consultations under the Regional Four (R4) framework and agreed to further deepen coordination on issues of common interest, the statement added.

Deputy PM Dar also met with the Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations, Ambassador Riyad Mansour, at the UN Headquarters.
During the meeting, Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s “unwavering support” for the Palestinian cause and people, including their “inalienable right to self-determination and an independent, contiguous and sovereign Palestinian State”.
“Pakistan will continue to strongly raise the issue during UNGA and at all relevant forums … and advance international efforts for an immediate end to the suffering in Gaza and a just and lasting peace,” the Foreign Office reported Dar as saying.

Deputy PM Dar has a “full programme” of high-level engagements in the week, the Foreign Office said in a statement.

“He will participate in ministerial forums and deliver Pakistan’s statements and interventions on key issues of importance to Pakistan, including bilateral, regional and international priorities across the UN agenda,” the Foreign Office said.
Alongside accompanying Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy PM Dar will hold a series of bilateral meetings with his counterparts and participate in a range of high-level engagements on the sidelines of the UNGA, the Foreign Office added.
Deputy PM Dar will also attend several high-level meetings on the Palestine issue, including a meeting of the eight Arab-Islamic countries and a high-level ministerial meeting of the global alliance for the implementation of the two-state solution, among others.
According to the Foreign Office, Deputy PM Dar is also expected to deliver a statement during the UN Security Council high-level briefing on artificial intelligence. He will also chair a meeting of the Economic Cooperation Organisation’s Council of Ministers.
