ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has removed the five-litre minimum petrol purchase requirement under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s fuel relief scheme, allowing beneficiaries to use their weekly Rs500 subsidy to buy petrol in any quantity, as 1.75 million citizens registered and nearly 1.5 million fuel tokens were issued within the first few days of the nationwide rollout.
Pakistan Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima said on Saturday that the decision was taken to facilitate beneficiaries amid rising international oil prices and the prevailing economic situation.

Under the scheme, eligible consumers are receiving a Rs100-per-litre subsidy on petrol. The government initially required motorcycle and three-wheeler users to purchase five litres against a single token, but the requirement has now been removed following public feedback.
According to the minister, 1.75 million citizens registered between September 14 and 19, while 1,493,848 fuel tokens had been issued so far.
Two- and three-wheelers accounted for 91.6 per cent of registrations, while vehicles with engines of up to 800cc made up the remaining 8.4 per cent.
September 18 remained the busiest registration day, with 511,961 people registering for the scheme.

Daily registrations were recorded at 38,974 on September 14, 149,412 on September 15, 349,935 on September 16, 385,406 on September 17 and 511,961 on September 18.
The minister said the registration SMS service had also been made free for eligible citizens.

Rs500 weekly relief can now be used for any quantity
Under the revised arrangement, motorcycles, rickshaws and Qingqi rickshaws will receive a Rs500 weekly fuel subsidy, which beneficiaries can now redeem for petrol in any quantity instead of being required to purchase at least five litres in a single transaction.

The government had originally structured the relief for two- and three-wheelers around five-litre tokens, equivalent to Rs500 in subsidy at Rs100 per litre.
The relaxation means a beneficiary buying less than five litres will still be able to receive the full applicable weekly subsidy, according to the revised mechanism announced by the government.

Eligibility expanded to older motorcycles and rickshaws
The government has also expanded the scheme to include motorcycles, rickshaws and Qingqi vehicles up to 20 years old.
Under the revised criteria, eligible two- and three-wheelers registered after January 1, 2006 can now benefit from the Rs100-per-litre subsidy.
The age limit was previously set at 15 years for two- and three-wheelers before being extended to 20 years following public feedback.

There is no change in the existing arrangement for cars with engines up to 800cc. Such vehicles remain eligible for a 10-litre token every 10 days, equivalent to three tokens per month.
The scheme covers motorcycles, three-wheelers and qualifying small cars, with registration available through the government’s digital system and SMS service.
