NANTERRE, France: Celine Dion made a deeply emotional return to the stage, six years after stepping away from live performances, as the Canadian superstar overcame a debilitating health battle to thrill fans in the first of a series of concerts in Paris.

“I’m standing on stage in this city I love so much thanks to your support and your love,” Dion told the packed crowd. “The path was rocky, the road was longer than planned but I held on.”

The singer, one of the world’s best-selling recording artists, announced in 2022 that she had been diagnosed with stiff person syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that causes severe muscle spasms and had left her unable to perform.

Dion appeared overwhelmed at times during her comeback, breaking down in tears while performing her opening number. At one point, she held out her microphone towards the audience, allowing fans to sing the bridge with her.

“I promised I wouldn’t cry, but they’re tears of joy,” she said, speaking mostly in French throughout the evening.

The staging was deliberately restrained, with Dion appearing mainly in a series of elegant black gowns, keeping the focus firmly on her voice and the emotion of her return.

“She didn’t shy away from what she suffered and she shared it with her audience,” British fan Catherine Rushforth said after leaving the arena in Nanterre, on the outskirts of Paris.

Dion revives beloved classics

Dion soon regained her trademark stage confidence, pulling faces, playing air guitar and delivering powerful renditions of songs including “My Heart Will Go On” and “All by Myself”, the hits that helped establish her as a global music icon.

She opened the concert with one of her biggest French-language songs, “On Ne Change Pas” (“We Don’t Change”), a poignant choice after her prolonged absence from the stage.

Her 16-concert Paris residency, followed by another 10 dates in 2027, has generated huge excitement across the French capital. Fans have gathered outside her luxury hotel until the early hours in the hope of catching a glimpse of the star.

“Her fight is an example for all of us, it’s wonderful,” said Julien Faruch, a chef and one of the fans attending the concert.

For Dion, the performance marked more than a musical comeback. It was a powerful personal moment after years of uncertainty, allowing her to stand before thousands of admirers once again and prove that her voice, and determination, remain undiminished.
