BIRMINGHAM, UK: England completed a 3-0 Test series whitewash against Pakistan on Saturday, cruising to an eight-wicket victory in the opening session of the penultimate day at Edgbaston after Joe Root and Jordan Cox struck unbeaten half-centuries to chase down a modest target of 130.
The emphatic win followed England’s dominant victories in the first two Tests, where they defeated Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs at Headingley and by 194 runs at Lord’s.

Abbas strikes twice before Root and Cox steady England
Set a target of 130 with two days remaining, England suffered an early setback when Pakistan’s experienced seamer Mohammad Abbas dismissed openers Ben Duckett and Emilio Gay for ducks in a thrilling opening over.
However, captain Root joined Cox to launch a composed recovery against a spirited Pakistan bowling attack.

Pakistan appeared close to another breakthrough on the final delivery of the 10th over, with England 35/2, when Root chopped a delivery from Mohammad Ali. The dismissal, however, was ruled a no-ball after Ali overstepped.
Root capitalised on the reprieve, reaching his 69th Test half-century in the 19th over. The milestone also took him past 1,000 Test runs at Edgbaston.

Cox soon followed, bringing up his half-century in the 22nd over with a boundary through deep midwicket off Saim Ayub. It was his third half-century of the home series and his emerging Test career.
The pair eventually completed the chase on the second delivery of the 25th over when Cox drove Mohammad Imran through the covers for a single.

Root finished unbeaten on 62 off 69 deliveries, while Cox remained not out on 59 from 76 balls.

Abbas was Pakistan’s only successful bowler in England’s final innings, claiming two wickets, while the rest of the touring attack failed to make a breakthrough.
